Excellent article! I am new to your site and your blog. Thanks for writing this one, in particular, with a nod to wonder. Chesterton really rocked my world when I came upon his writing a few years ago. Such a child-like playfulness mixed with a deep desire to live within the mystery of God. I agree that we move too quickly to the next shiny thing, even as “the church,” and we have lost a sense of the mundane and the simple. To come back to the simple gospel would be such a refreshing change in the right direction. I like what you wrote here: “We think that the way forward for the church is for God to do a new thing. What we really need is for him to do an old thing again. We need him to send his spirit again, we need him to transform our hearts again, we need him to change our desires and our affections to match his…again.” That’s a compelling vision and a worthwhile mission.
