I would say it comes down to the understanding of pastoral calling, the maturity level of young leaders, and a search for community. In some cases amazing 40 year old youth pastors who have served at a church for 20 years do sadly and I would say at the great fault of the church get let go, in other cases youth pastors in there 20's serve at 5 different churches before they are 30. I am a believer in contracted time commitments at time of employment. If you are going to take this position you must commit to 10 years of ministry.

For me it's kind of the same principle that my wife and I have about talking of divorce. For my wife and I we simply don't talk about divorce. It's never going to be ont he radar for us, so you just never mention it. We're committed to working out whatever comes our way. For me, as a youth pastor, I don't make statements like, "If I were to ever leave…" or "When I move on…" I'm a youth pastor and have been at the same church 5 1/2 years. I'm just now beginning to see the the fruit of the investments being made.

I am so much more effective with teens and parents of my teens now than I was 30 years ago because of pastoring them as a father rather than an older brother.
