There are a few sayings in christianese (the language Christians speak) that grate at me. One of those is the saying “Make Jesus Famous.” It may just be a me thing. Some times God allows me to be frustrated with something because He is after something in me. It seems that many people in the Christian world are tagging photos of things they are proud of in ministry with the hash tag #makingjesusfamous Here’s the problem. I can’t see their heart but God can. So I’m not sure if they are actually doing what the bible would consider fame worthy.
I have been thinking this for past few weeks. One of the things I think social media and technology does is create the “next biggest thing” mentality in each of us. Google+ came out it looks very cool like it could be the next big thing. Blogs and social media are great where I think we need to take pause is how we look at those people who are the “next big thing” I think we make the mistake of trying to learn from sons when we should be learning how to father sons from fathers.
What I mean by that is this. With the new dawn of social media Sons are bursting on the scene everywhere but behind every son is a father. Sons carry the DNA of their fathers but a son can’t tell you how to raise a son to be a man. I know that there are lots of people who want to be “Christian Famous.” I don’t. I would rather have natural and spiritual sons who do more in this life than I ever will. We are never going to see our world transformed if we are more into ourselves than we are into reaching and teaching sons to be fathers.
I don’t know everything there is to know about kids ministry or leadership but I know enough to know that what I do know comes from the Fathers in my life.
