Funny last week I was wondering if anyone was doing a children’s ministry podcast, I only know of one or two. That same week Tony Kummer called me and asked if I could do an interview with him. He did the first episode with Amy Fenton Lee that’s definitely worth a listen. So last week […]

Retro Post: Should kids bring their Bible's to church.

30 Comments / September 13, 2010

*I did this post over two years ago, I never got much (actually got zero) feedback. I am interested to hear what the Kidmin community has to say. I have been going over all our processes. One of them is how, why, when should we be giving rewards for certain behavior. I have two pet

This made me laugh, my favorite part is when the dad is having tea with his daughter and he acts like a gangster and knocks over all her stuff. Very funny. Made be want to make a rap video of myself…hmmm…..bravo Toyota bravo.

Lessons for the long haul: Build a team.

2 Comments / September 9, 2010

When I stared in kids ministry as a volunteer the only model out there was what I call the one-man show model. To do kids ministry you had to be able to do puppets, juggle, ride a unicycle and do a “gospel illusion” all at the same time. I learned the value of team from

Lessons for the long haul: Be a self feeder

5 Comments / September 8, 2010

Here is an excerpt from an article about being a self-feeder I wrote for K! Magazine. If you don’t subscribe you need to. Being a self-feeder is a must for any growing healthy Christian.  It is even more essential for those involved in leading kids. We are often in that position of giving out and pouring into kids and families.

Lessons for the long haul: Motivation

1 Comment / September 7, 2010

One of the things that derails many people in ministry is the issue of motivation. If you are going to make it for the long haul you need to have a Kingdom building mindset. You have to realize that I am here to build the Kingdom of God I am not hear to build my

Lessons for the long haul: Dealing with Discouragement

2 Comments / September 3, 2010

If you have been in ministry of any capacity for more than one day I am sure that you have been through a season of discouragement. A big reason many people quit kids ministry is due to prolonged periods of discouragement. One of the skills every kids pastor needs is the ability to encourage themselves. If

YouTube Friday: The best things come in small packages

3 Comments / September 3, 2010

I am sure I was the last person in all of America to see this video. But this week someone showed me the video of a 10 year old girl that in my opinion could dethrone Susan Bolye as the most amazing vocal talent I have ever seen. I remember hearing Susan for the first time she was stunning.

Lessons for the long haul: Calling

8 Comments / September 2, 2010

For me the hands down number one thing you need to make it for the long haul in children’s ministry is an overwhelming sense of calling. I have talked to many people in ministry who have lasted over the long haul nearly all of them can point to a specific sense of calling, an event

God called me in a Steve Camp concert.

Why does God use bad CCM to nab his pastors?

I think being called at a Steve Camp concert is slightly less embarrassing than Phil Driscoll. Both of which had some sort of talent I wouldn't blame God. Now if there were lots of pastors being called at Carman or One Bad Pig concerts then you would have a very valid point.

It brings a smile to my face that you're familiar with One Bad Pig. I still have one of their tapes… but no way to play it.

I'm embarrassed. God never spoke to me at a Phil Driscoll, Steve Camp, Petra, Carmen, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Imperials, Michael W. Smith, or Mylon LeFevere concert…

This is a great series Sam!

God spoke to me one day as I watched a group of kids gather around an adult and lay hands and pray for him. This man was broken and crying before God and the kids I was watching came up behind him and held his hands up as he cried out to God.

I told my wife that day that I knew God wanted me to teach kids how to have faith like that. I remember it like it was yesterday…and it was 10 years ago! Know your call and NEVER let the enemy put doubt into your head that it doesn't exist!
