Give Away Tuesday: God’s Kids Worship: Modern Worship

A while back I did a review of some worship music for kids by a company called God’s Kids Worship. One of the things that is important to me is that Parents and kids are on the same page when it comes to worship. The folks at God’s Kids Worship do a great job with this. You can read my full review here.

The folks at God’s Kids Worship have graciously agreed to give one of my readers a full 3 CD worship set.

  1. I would love to get the CD set. I stopped by their booth at the CM Expo and was very impressed with what I saw.

  5. Thanks for the review! You rock it Sam.

From the viewpoint as the guy who produced these CDs, let me pull back the curtain on how we think the CDs (and our DVDs) fit into kids ministry, and why we used all kids voices on these recordings.

While our CDs & DVDs are designed to work in children's ministry, unlike Integrity's SPK, there is no companion curriculum. We focused on delivering the music and countdowns that can be used with anybody else's curriculum; any other publisher, or locally generated curriculum. That means they work in any kids ministry gathering, whether it's Sunday morning children's church, Wednesday night clubs, home outreaches, camps, mission trips, or anything else. A lot of people like the continuity that provides them in their ministry.

I also thought I'd fill you in on why we use all kids on the recordings, even though it costs a lot more to get good kids vocals than to get a good adult vocal track.

I worked for 10 years as the music director for a certain large purple dinosaur that will remain unnamed. We researched how kids interact with music; toddler kids all the way through teen age. The one consistent element that we found for all ages was that if you want kids to sing along, they do best when there are kid vocals for them to model. Intuitively we all know that works; from the Mickey Mouse Club to The Jonas Brothers & Hannah Montana we've all seen it's true. Those performers never needed an adult song leader to get kids to sing along, they just start singing and kids sing along, automatically. The truth that we all know intuitively is that if kids hear other kids singing (OK… we're talking quality kids singing too), they will sing along. It ain't rocket science.

On the other hand, adult vocals tend to be in keys that kids can't sing. Sorry, but Chris Tomlin tends to sing 5 notes beyond the range of kids, on either end of their range. I love his stuff and we do it in our church, but unless his songs (and David Crowder, Leeland, Israel Houghton, Hillsong.. etc.) are put in the kind of "universal kid vocal range," kids either have to unnaturally croak the low notes, or screech the high ones. But when kids hear other *kids* sing, they feel safe to join in, and more importantly *blend in* with the vocals, because it's actually in their range and sounds like them.

So, while adults can't always blend into the vocal tracks on our CDs & DVDs, kids can- and that's the point. The worship is for the kids. With our stuff, it's often better for the adults to let the recorded vocals and on-screen lyrics "lead" the singing, or use a kid "praise team." The kids will almost always automatically join in. That's our experience anyway, and that's the feedback we often get.

At the same time, we recognize that Group, Hillsong Kids, Uncle Charley, Yancy, Alan Root, and many others have some terrific resources with adults singing lead. We think that we're part of the mix that should be used in kids ministry; not the be-all, end-all. We organized ours so that it's easy to drop into any place you've got kids ministry; and that organization probably makes it easy to use in more places than most resources; but we don't advocate that anybody throw away their Group "motions" DVDs. Find the stuff that connects kids with God, and then pick the ones that make it easy for you to do kids ministry and relate to kids.

Thanks again for the review, and thanks for caring about God's kids. Your ministry matters more than you'll ever know in this life.
