Book of Repentance
What is Repentance- How to tell God your sorry
Key Point – Repentance means change!
Memory Verse – 2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation…”
Skit – Kids playing with kickball one kid hit another says he’s sorry doesn’t mean is another kid does the same but apologizes and means it. Difference is in their attitude. – Through this skit convey to the kids that you can say something but unless you truly mean it, what you say is just words. We can say the words with our mouth but unless we mean it with our heart it is not true repentance, because God sees our hearts. When we say we are sorry to God and to each other it must come from our heart. If we are truly sorry and it comes from our heart our actions will change we will not do the same thing over and over again.
Skit – Military skit – Repentance is a 180 turn around – have a drill sergeant yelling at a group of recruits telling them to turn around and go the other direction all do but one who keeps going one direction – All the kids turn around except one kid. – Have everyone on stage freeze and MC will explain to the kids that repentance according to the Bible is turning from sin and turning to Jesus. Ask the kids which one of the recruits is showing true repentance. Explain that when we change it must be a physical change in our hearts and in our actions.
Object lesson – Explain to proper way to ask for forgiveness – Have large flash cards made up explaining the steps David in Psalms 50 – Have large flashcards made from poster board or cardboard that read – 1. I’m Sorry, 2. I was wrong, 3. Please forgive me. Have them in a different order see if the kids put them in the right order and explain to the kids the proper way to apologize.
Object lesson –Stuffed animal – repentance is reflected in our actions MC explains that he hits his animal when he gets mad then says he is sorry and gives it a treat then hits it again – our actions show what is really in our heart. Because when we are really truly sorry we change our actions we stop doing things that hurt because repentance means change.
Object lesson – Take a dollar and turn it into change show how when we change, repent we even look different. When we say we are sorry and repent we should change we should not keep doing the same things. Just like this dollar looks different when it is changed into change. It is still worth the same we are always worth the same to God but they way we look is changed. Just like these four quarters are still a dollar when we repent it means we change.
Puppet –A puppet comes up that never says that he is sorry and is proud of it- MC explains that we have to say that we are sorry to go to heaven we need to repent and change. The Bible tells us that if we do not forgive others our Father in heaven will not forgive us. It also says in Romans that if we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart we will be saved. Asking Jesus to forgive us is just the start to being a Christian. We must also ask others to forgive us as well. If you want Jesus to forgive you, you are going to have to repent and that means change your attitude.
