Bonus Youtube Friday: Jesus is a Liberal Democrat

Found this over at Jesus Need New PR

The video is very funny and delivered as only Colbert can. But the closing paragraph of his monologe is very convicting whether or not Colbert actually believes what he is saying.

“If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”

  1. This is quite fun and challenging!

    A couple things to remember: God never told the government to provide for the poor, but the individual. And He never takes without permission (even the boy with the loaves gave it to Jesus).

    And you're right, Sam, Colbert's last paragraph is quite convicting…and inspiring! It makes me want to go out there and show him what a Christ-Follower should be. I'm going to do it – who else will join me and personally give to someone in need this Christmas?

    1. God never takes without permission? How do you reckon the folks in Jericho felt about having their city taken? And God/Jesus certainly never said "Government, you really shouldn't be helping the poor.

  3. Aaron thanks for the comment totally agree. I think we get so into being a christian who is a Rep. or a Dem. we forget that neither are right. I am totally against big government but totally for true community. The reason IMHO that the government has the reach and the power it has is because the church has forfeited much of the reach and the power it was intended to have.

  4. I love Colbert and his unique way of hitting us between the eyes by bringing out the absurdity of selling one's soul to political ideals using humor. I think it funny, though, that we don't see legislating morality as big government, but when it comes to government prioritizing helping out those in need, it's "big government." 🙂

    1. Henry I am as anti politics as they come a registered independent I am not pro either party. I just think the government does to much of the churches job. Is there a place for government? Yes. Should the church be doing more to help people rather than rally behind your favorite party? Absolutely.

    [A message to share with others]
    YES Sam, you're right! This means we must act on our compassion God gives. Our churches must act on it and help the poor as well.

  6. Part 2/3
    Our compassion was not meant for shoving it off on the Government, so we can go about our self-centered Christian & non-Christian ways, doing our own duties feeling smug or something like it. SURE, we don’t see it because we can become smug very quietly & easily in our duties and doing no more than that! We do this… when we have a HUGE Government that does “IT” so-inadequately for us!! That’s FOR US!! So we don’t have too!! Oh sure, we do “it” for our own little family, sure! What has happen to us? Our Founding Fathers and the national conscience promoted the poor in yesteryear. It was the Church that was the safety net back then until around 1954! What happen to us? What did happen? I suppose I could go into THAT but that’s another story.

  7. Part 3/3
    It’s no wondering our Chinese “underground” House Church* brothers & sisters are praying desperately for us! THEY CARE! They are praying & interceding that we may return to our first love; our Lord Jesus! That we may walk in Covenant! WE are in trouble, for we must walk in Covenant that we may be known of the Lord at HIS coming! {Matt. 24:14 & Matt.25:1-13 Watching is doing, and recognizing Christ when we see Him in the poor, in strangers, in people we dislike, and in our neighbors.}

    Just a message from Rob to myself and all of us. –Rob
