Deuteronomy

– Book of Faith & Obedience

Key Point – Believe and obey
Memory Verse – Deut. 4:1  Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.

Skit – Don’t eat candy before dinner – A mother tells her son not to eat candy before dinner, and the little boy says he won’t. He has a friend over that has a whole bag of tootsie rolls the good boy says he can’t have any; but, the boy with the tootsie rolls says “Who are going to believe, your mom or me?”  The good boy decides to believe his friend. They eat a whole bag of tootsie rolls and get very sick. The good boy apologizes to his mother and says that he will listen from now on.

Puppet – Puppet comes up with his own 10 commandments – A puppet comes up and explains to a pastor puppet that he knows all about the 10 commandments. The pastor asks what they are the other puppet says 1. Always watch blues clues 2. Never eat Vegetables 3. Never help out around the house. Ect.. The pastor stops the boy and explains that those are not the 10 commandments. That if we love Jesus we need to do what he tells us to do not what we want to do. We need to eat right, we need to obey our parents.

Object lesson – Faith means trusting God – Have a young person come up (pick an older kid; a boy). Have two adults standing behind the volunteer and have the volunteer fall backwards when the adults give the O.K. The young person falls back and is caught. The emcee interviews the young person, and asks them if it was scary at all. Explain that what was just done should only be done by adults, also explain that just as the young person had to trust the adults behind them we need to trust God.

Object lesson – Obedience is doing what God says – Ask, “How many would do most anything I ask for a candy bar?” Pick one kid out and have them stand on one leg and touch their nose. Explain how we are willing to do crazy things for a small reward. Think how awesome heaven will be and the same way you did whatever I said we need to be obedient to God and do what ever he says, through our parents, our pastors, and the bible.

Bible story – Ten Commandments Deut. 4 – God gave these commands to help us believe and obey. –

Deut. 4: 5-8 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

God wants us to have faith to believe in who he is and obey. Faith comes when we understand that God loves us and because He loves us no matter what we can trust him.

The 10 Commandments are rules to help us understand what God is like. How many of you think that life would be better without rules? I thought it would be fun to play a little game would like to? I need 5 Girls and 7 boys have them come up and stand on either side of you. Pause for a few seconds then say Go! After you wait a couple of minutes declare the Girls the winners. And give the girls a prize (The boys will go nuts) Ask everyone to sit down. Ask the boys if they had fun. Tell the kids that we all need and even want rules to live by. Explain that the 10 Commandments are rules for us to obey and live by. They help us to understand who God is. The bible is a letter that tells us how much God loves us. We demonstrate our faith in him by trusting  him and obeying him.

The 10 commandments are not about Rules but are to help us understand how much God loves us.
When we realize how much God loves us it helps us trust him.
When we trust God totally it is much easier to obey him whatever he asks us to do.
